Celebrated globally on 4th February to raise awareness of cancer as well as to encourage its prevention and treatment, World Cancer Day was institutionalized in 2000 at the first World Summit Against Cancer in Paris by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration. People, Businesses, governments and non-profit organizations work together on this day to help the General public learn more about different types of cancer and how to watch out for it along with adopting preventive measures. The World Cancer Day not only aims to reduce the suffering caused by cancer by 2020 but has also initiated many movements to emotionally and physically strengthen the families which have been affected by the vicious disease of Cancer. One of the most popular global movement is #NoHairSelfie where the participants shave their heads either physically or virtually to show a symbol of courage for those undergoing cancer treatment.
According to a WHO report, Cancer is a leading cause of death around the globe estimating that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 further forwarding the proposition that low-income countries are hit harder by cancer than the high-resource countries because of lack of adequate awareness and health resources. This makes it inevitably essential for all of us to address the growing problem of cancer by considerably working on its effective control measures. And this makes it essentially important for us to pledge together to aware ourselves about this ever-growing problem so that we can keep ourselves as well as our loved ones around us safe. This day truly symbolizes hope for a brighter future where cancer will no longer be a life-threatening disease.
